BUSINESS DAY: If he were able, says Christoph Dornier, he would write what he paints. Since he believes he cannot convincingly express himself with words, Dornier’s surrealistic stories — labyrinths of dreams, riddles, mythology, secrets and symbols — are captured, in unfettered colour and imagery, on canvas. Dornier is intrigued by metamorphosis. A large painting of a female torso with the head of Zeus transforming into a two-headed swan overlooks the tasting room at the winery. “The thought that a plant can become a human being and vice versa, a face can become a fire, or a female body, an instrument, is an attractive thought to me. With a paint stroke, an abstract work can suddenly produce an animal. Out of coincidence, something new can develop.”
